The Cities Collect is safe art

wpe7.jpg (35228 bytes)

Le repas frugal. Pablo Picasso. 1904

by Clea Felien

The latest show at the Walker is called The Cities Collect. This show highlights the personal collections of more than 60 local collectors. With almost 200 works of art, this show provides much to look at.
There are numerous masterpieces of Picasso’s, and paintings by the terribly groovy 90's bad girl artist Elizabeth Peyton. This show ranges from the serious collectors who own many of the established abstract and expressionist art of the first half of the century to the brave new collectors who are willing to go out on a limb and purchase artwork by artists who are still alive. Overall this show is a wonderful example of 20th century art.
As we enter we first see a beautiful Georgia O'keefe. This piece belongs to the Curtis collection, arguably one of the richest collections in Minnesota. Strolling through the collection we see unusual and early paintings by Philip Guston, beautiful pieces by Emil Nolde, Oscar Kokoshka, Otto Dix and other Expressionist and Fauve painters. The highlight of this group being a gorgeous drawing by Egon Schile.
Another collector shares his obsession with George Baslitz: an entire room devoted to his art. Baslitz is a contemporary expressionistic painter who paints upside down. Baslitz's thick impasto use of paint emotes sensual visceral responses. His sculpture elicits the same response. Large thick gouges into raw untreated wood that appear clumsy but maintain an elegance. Slowly these carvings give way to an awkward emotive figure.
The second level appears to be mostly work from the 60s to the present. A very impressive collection of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe prints. A complete set of Jasper John's number series. Some lovely Cy Twombly scribbles. And a wall of interesting portraits by mostly living artists.
My critique of this show, and even great shows have room for improvement, would be that there is almost no art by local artists. Having kept a close eye on art by artists right here in Minneapolis, I have to say I think we have some pretty great artworks. Also, the collectors shown are the ones with lots of cash. I would like to take this time to personally thank all the people with very little money who just love art, who buy it because they can't live without it. It brightens their day, it makes them think. They are drawn to art for reasons other than the feeling of being more educated, more chic, or more sophisticated. It is people who save for a piece by an unknown artist that are the real collectors. The people who buy art before it has the art worlds stamp of approval. These are the real heroes in the world of art buying. It’s a shame more of this was not in The Cities Collect show.
Perhaps the Walker could go out on a limb and throw in some not fully established artists, supported by some not fabulously wealthy collectors. Let’s breathe a little life into the dusty institution of tried and true, safe, collecting.
Exhibit continues through January 7, 2000. Walker Art Center, Vineland Place, Mpls., 612-375-7622.
