At the end of September, the largest Methodist church in Minnesota, Park Avenue United at 3400 Park Ave. S., marked the completion of their $4.75 million dollar building project. This major investment in the Central neighborhood will provide space for services including the Computer Learning Center, the BURST (Building Up Reading Skills through Tutoring) program, and a range of family services including a food and clothing ministry, the St. Mary's Health Clinic and the Legal Clinic.

Basra Peace Team

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2730 E. 31st St., will host a meeting with two members of the Basra Peace Team, sponsored by the Twin Cities Campaign to Lift Sanctions, Th., Oct. 12, 7 p.m. Lisa Gizzi and Mark McGuire have returned from Iraq after spending two months living in Basra with local families. The purpose of the delegation was to witness, record, and partake in the experience of living daily life under the ten-year-old embargo. The five-member team lived without air conditioning or a telephone, and subsisted only on the contents of the Iraqi food basket. On August 5, across from the UN Headquarters in Baghdad, they participated in a fast, along with 75 people in the Twin Cities, to protest the devastating effect of the sanctions on the people of Iraq. Benefit Concert

All God's Children Metropolitan Community Church, 3100 Park Ave. S., presents soprano Rebecca Larrabee, the AGCMCC choir and some special guest performers in a benefit concert Sun., Oct. 7, 7 p.m. The music will be from Larrabee's upcoming debut CD recording. Proceeds from the free will offering are for the church Sunday school program.

Gospel Explosion of 2000

The Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Combined Church Choir, 3805 3rd Ave. S., with Deacon Elige Brown; the Shiloh Baptist Church Mass Choir, the Macedonia Baptist Church Choir, 3801 1st Ave. S., and special guests from Chicago, IL, will present Gospel Explosion of 2000 at Richfield Lutheran Church, 60th and Nicollet Ave. S., Fri., Oct. 27, 7 p.m. A donation of $8 is requested. Thanksgiving Hymns from Many Cultures

Bible Education

Ecology and Economics Dialogue

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2730 E. 31st St., has organized a dialogue concerning ecology and economics based on presentations by Dr. John Cobb, Jr., for Th. & Fri., Oct. 5 & 6. Author of books on sustainability and the global economy from a Christian perspective, Dr. Cobb will speak Th. at 7:30 p.m. following dinner at 6:30, and on Fri. at 9 a.m. ("Current Dominance of the Economic Order") and at 10:30 a.m. ("Alternative Vision of Society"). Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m. The cost for the entire series, including meals, is $20 but it is possible to attend selected portions of the conference. Introduction to Judaism

Temple of Aaron, 616 S. Mississippi River Blvd., will offer a class on the Jewish experience and the basic tenets of the Jewish faith taught by co-senior rabbis Jonathan Ginsburg and Julie Gordon. The 18 Wednesday sessions, beginning Oct.11, 7:30-9:30 p.m., are open to adult men and women of any race, color, national origin or religion. Challenging Consumer Culture

Culture jamming is the new revolution. Culture jamming challenges consumption of goods produced in unfair and inhumane ways. It challenges the corporate forces that transform our wants into needs. It challenges the process of getting our identity from brand names.
At the Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers peace and justice event Sat., Nov. 4, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, 511 Groveland at Lyndale, there will be a booth about culture jamming and ways to get involved. The Anoka High School performing group "Revolution," who received the Minnesota Peace Prize for 2000, will present a piece about sweatshops. Jack Nelson Pallmeyer, Justice and Peace Studies, University of St. Thomas, will speak on how to act for justice in a changing global economy built on military power and economic greed. Information will be available about Jubilee 2000, closing the SOA, the landmine treaty and genetic engineering.

Memoirs of a Spiritual Outsider

Generation X writer Suzanne Clores says "Spiritual life for young people has become a hip and acceptable fashion." On Fri., Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m., she will appear at Borders Bookstore in Uptown promoting her book, Memoirs of a Spiritual Outsider, in which she examines traditions such as Buddhism, Wicca, Yoga, Sufism, Shamanism and Voodoo. In her book, she seeks to fulfill a spiritual need by exploring alternatives to institutional religion.

The Earth's Imagination

St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4537 3rd Ave. S., invites the community to an eight part eco-spirituality video series by cosmologist Brian Swimme, Tu. evenings, Oct. 10-Dec. 5. Swimme places the human psyche within the fifteen billion year cosmic process in order to highlight the directions in which human consciousness is evolving today and into the future. Special Sunday Events at Minnehaha UCC

Minnehaha United Church of Christ, 4001 38th Ave. S., an Anti-Racist, Open & Affirming and Just Peace church, will observe three special Sundays in October.
On Oct. 15, following 10:30 worship, everyone is invited to a Sierra Leone dinner, prepared by refugees from Sierra Leone.
At 10:30 worship on Oct. 22, Minnehaha UCC will join in the 8th annual Naional Observance of Children's Sabbath. Thousands of Jewish, Christian and Muslim congregations across the nation will unite in a common witness for children and their families. Everyone is invited to affirm and celebrate the children in our community.
An All Saints' Day service will be held during the worship hour on Oct. 29.

Fall Festival

Santo Rosario (Holy Rosary Catholic Church), 24th St. at 18th Ave. S., is planning their annual Fall Festival and Dinner for Sun., Oct. 8, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. A chicken dinner with Mexican food a la carte will be served until 4 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for kids under 12.

Rummage Sales

Lyndale Congregational Church, 810 W. 31st St., presents their fall rummage sale and snack bar, Sat., Oct. 7, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Clothing, linens, household appliances, furniture, toys, and more will be available. The snack bar, specializing in turkey sandwiches and pies, will be open during the entire sale.
Minnehaha Communion Lutheran Church, 4101 37th Ave. S., is organizing a rummage sale for Sat., Oct. 7, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. with bag time from noon to 1. Sloppy joes will be served.

Harvest Dinner

Epworth United Methodist Church, 3207 37th Ave. S., will serve a Harvest Dinner including turkey and pumpkin pie, Th., Oct. 12, 5-7 p.m. The cost is $6.75 for adults and $2.75 for children ages 5-12. Children 4 and under are free. FFI call 722-0232.

Peace in Iraq

Every Wednesday at 5 p.m. people of all faiths are invited to meet at the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge for a meditative vigil calling for peace in Iraq, bearing witness to the continuing bombings and 10 years of economic sanctions against the people of Iraq. The event is sponsored by Friends for a Non-Violent World, 612-321-9787, Women Against Military Madness and other peace and justice organizations.

School of the Americas

Those concerned with closing the School of the Americas (SOA) can join SOAWatch online at www.circlevision.org/mnsoaw.html. The trip to Fort Benning, Georgia, to call for the closing of the SOA, is scheduled for November. FFI about the trip contact Veterans for Peace at 612-821-9141.

Simple Living

Minnehaha United Church of Christ, 4001 38th Ave. S., hosts a simple-living group to celebrate and support one another in living more simply, frugally and in harmony with creation. Meetings are the first Wed. of the month at 7 p.m. Call the church at 612-729-7556 for more details.

Making Cars Available

St. Joan of Arc, 4537 3rd Ave. S., is a ministry partner with CARS (Community Auto Repair & Redistribution Service), a non-profit program providing cars for persons in need. Automobiles in good working order are needed; however, CARS will accept any vehicle. Donors receive a tax donation receipt. FFI call 952-881-1115.

Food & Clothing

Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 3400 Park Ave. S., offers food and clothing through Cornerstone, open Tuesdays from noon-4 p.m. and Thursdays 1-5 p.m. Used clothing can be purchased for a small fee and food shelf items are available.

Salem Evangelical Free Church, 3101 14th Ave. S., operates the Clothes Corner, open every Tu., 10 a.m.-noon, selling low-cost clothing and bedding (10 cents or less). Refreshments are served. The neighborhood is welcome.
On Sundays they serve a meal, EAT (Eating All Together), at 12:15 p.m. Friends and neighbors are invited.

Mount Olive Lutheran Church, E. 31st St. and Chicago Ave. S., offers new and used school clothes at very low prices for people who obtain referrals from WIC, Salvation Army, a social worker or another church. The Clothes Closet is located in the church and is open Tuesdays, 10-noon and 1-3 p.m.
A free community luncheon is served the first Saturday of every month at 12 noon.

Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 E. 50th St., offers a MinneHarvest of free groceries--surplus perishables such as produce and breads--the fourth Sat. of each month (Sept. 23), 9-10:30 a.m.

Free Senior Lunch

Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 41st St. and Cedar Ave., will serve a free lunch to seniors every third Tuesday of the month (Sept. 19) at 12:30 p.m. A short program of music, helpful hints and encouragement will be part of each lunch hour. At 1:30 p.m. the parish nurse will be available for blood pressure checks and consultation. Call the church at 612-722-0157 for a ride and more information.

Dealing with Addiction

Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 E. 50th St., hosts Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, Fridays at 7 p.m.; Overeaters Anonymous meetings, Mondays at 10 a.m.; and Adult Children of Sexually Dysfunctional Families meetings, Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.

Asbury United Methodist Church, 4501 Bloomington Ave. S., holds Cocaine Anonymous meetings in the church parlor on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Legal Advice

Park Avenue Methodist Church, 3400 Park Ave., offers a free legal clinic for people who would otherwise not have access to legal advice. The clinic can advise people on cases such as family law, housing, immigration and civil rights; make referrals concerning benefits and services for disabled children and make referrals for representation when necessary through the Volunteer Lawyers Network. The clinic is open Thursdays, 3-5 p.m. The clinic is a part of the Park Avenue Legal Ministries (PALM) and is sponsored by the Park Avenue Foundation and the Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN).

Free Legal Clinic

Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 3045 Chicago Ave. S., will be the site for the Chicago Lake Legal Clinic, a free service offering assistance for landlord/tenant, domestic, immigration and other problems. The clinic will be open every 3rd Friday of the month--Oct. 20, Nov. 17, Dec. 15--from 1 to 3 p.m. Call Donna at 612-827-5919 with any questions.
