Minneapolis seeks election judges to serve the voters during the 2000 election season. The hourly wage is set at 40% above the minimum wage (currently $7.21 per hour). The National Park Service announces the new “National Parks Pass,” which provides unlimited entrance to all 379 National Parks for one full year from the date of purchase. The Pass will be available for purchase at the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area and other National Park Service areas and offices. The Pass costs $50, and 70% of proceeds go directly to projects that help the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, while the remaining 30% goes to a national fund that supports projects at other National Park Service Areas. Public immunization clinics for Hennepin County residents who have no insurance which covers immunizations will be held in the month of May. Immunizations will be offered for nine diseases. The Bakken, a Library and Museum of Electricity in Life, presents Family Science Saturdays, “The Battle of the Currents,” on Saturday, June 3. On May 3, Hennepen County Medical Center (HCMC) will participate in National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day, an event dedicated to providing accurate information and free screening to those who think they may be suffering from symptoms of anxiety disorders. HCMC’s screenings will take place on Wednesday, May 3, in the Medcal Speciality Center (D Building) at 914 South 8th St. in the lower level D Conference Room. There will be two screening sessions, Session 1 at 10 AM, and session 2 at 2 PM. Free information will be available about various anxiety disorders at a table in the C Building Lobby from 9AM to 3 PM.

The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) announces the Arts Activities Support Grant Awards. This program offers grants of up to $8,500 to small and mid-sized nonprofit organizations, community groups, and informal groups/collaborations to support arts activities in all disciplines. Recipients include ArtStop, CreArte, Lyn-Lake Improvement Association, No Name Exhibitions at the Soap Factory, Patrick’s Cabaret, and more. Open Book, the Minneapolis warehouse building that now houses three Minnesota literary arts organizations, celebrates it’s grand opening on Sunday, May 21 from noon to 4 PM. Open Book is located at 1011 Washington Ave. South. The event is free and open to the public. The grand opening will feature tours of Open Book, information on each of the organizations’ programs, drawings for prizes, appearences by local celebrities, and a special reading by Minneapolis short story author Charles Baxter. The public is invited to the Midtown Greenway Coalition annual meeting, Thursday, May 25, 6-7:30 PM. 2836 Lyndale Ave South (enter building from north side and go downstairs). The event is free. The annual meeting is a celebration of the progress on the Greenway, a linear park space more then five miles long, that will cross Minneapolis along the 29th St. railroad corridor one block north of Lake At. There will be food, music, Greenway updates, and a ten minute business meeting for elections.

Public Art Master Plan progress report, a chance for the public to offer comments on ideas that a consulting team is coming up with for a Public Art Master Plan for the Midtown Greenway, will be Thursday, May 18, from 7-9 PM at Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Ave South.

The Standish Ericsson Neighborhood Association Garden Club will hold its annual Spring Perennial Swamp Friday, May 19, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Sibley Park located at 40th St. E. and 19th Ave. S. The Central Neighborhood CleanSweep will be held Saturday, May 20. Trucks will go through the alleys that day and collect trash and volunteers as needed to help load the trash. If you are interested in helping, meet at Sabathani between 8:30 and 9 a.m. for coffee and donuts and a truck assignment.
