Welcoming and Affirming
The Rev. Douglas M. Donley will be officially installed as Pastor of University Baptist
Church, 1219 University Ave. at 13th Ave. SE, on Sun., May 20, at 4 p.m. Rev. Donley, 39,
who was denied ordination twice because he would not say homosexuality was a sin began his
work at the Welcoming and Affirming church on Mar. 15.
University Baptist Church is one of two Minneapolis Welcoming and Affirming American
Baptist congregations. Rev. Donley calls it a courageous and justice-conscious
congregation. Its work includes loaves & fishes, meals on wheels and friendship
tours to Leon, Nicaragua.
The service will feature preaching by The Rev. Dr. Mel White, once a ghost writer for
Jerry Falwell and others before coming out of the
closet.
Riverside
Summer Program at Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2730 E. 31st St., is planning a summer program for all
children and youth of the community. In June, two classes have been prepared. From Monday
through Friday, June 18 - 22, children, ages 3 to grade 7, will meet from 9:30 a.m. -
11:30 a.m. for Hello God. Their activities will take place in spaces
transformed into a model of the city. From Tue. through Fri., June 26 - 29, grades 6 - 8
will meet at 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for urban work and adventure in God's People
Serve the City. There is no registration fee. Grade levels refer to those completed.

Simplicity, Frugality and Environment
Simple living benefits people on an individual spiritual level while at the same time
benefitting the environment.
The Simple Living Group, for those interested in frugal living or just simplifying their
hectic lives, meets at Minnehaha United Church of Christ, 4001 38th Ave. S., the first

Intergenerational Summer Celebration
Minnehaha United Church of Christ, 4001 38th Ave. S., celebrates its cultural diversity on
three Tuesdays in June - the 14th, 21st and 28th. The evenings will begin with supper at
6:15 and continue with bible study, worship, story telling, crafts, games and a workshop

Peace Vigil
The Twin Cities Campaign to Lift Sanctions welcomes the public to a peace vigil held every
Wednesday at 5 p.m., at the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue Bridge. For over a year, this
group has reminded the Twin Cities of the continuing bombings and the economic sanctions
against the people of Iraq, resulting in the deaths of 5,000 children a month. FFI call

Harvest of Cain
The Resource Center of the Americas, 3019 Minnehaha Ave., invites the public to a
celebration and reading from Harvest of Cain, a novel written by local writer Jack
Nelson-Pallmeyer, Fri., June 1, 7 p.m. This first novel, following five other books on
various social justice issues, combines political intrigue and religious awakening as
ambitious CIA agents collide with salt-of-the-earth peasant farmers in El Salvador. FFI

First Pentecost of the Millenium

Music at Mount Olive
Mount Olive Music and Fine Arts at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 3045 Chicago Ave. S.,
presents renowned guitarist Jeffrey Van in an afternoon recital Sun., May 20, 4 p.m. A
free will offering will be taken to support the ongoing Music and Fine Arts Program. A
nursery will be available during the performance and a reception will follow in the chapel
lounge.
Summer Urban Academy For 1st Through 7th Graders
Calvary Lutheran Church, 3901 Chicago Ave., will hold its 2001 Summer Urban Academy from
Mon., June 18 until Thu., July 26. Jointly sponsored by the Minneapolis Public Schools and
the Crossroads Foundation, this six-week alternative summer school program focuses on life
skills. Classes include reading and math, interest groups such as arts, music and
computers, and self-development skills such as conflict solving, self-reliance, care for
others and building a positive self-image. Each day students will have time for exploring
biblical stories and worship.
Students are in class for four hours a day, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mondays through
Thursdays. On Sunday mornings, students will use their leadership skills as part of the
worship service.

Free Legal Clinic
Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 3045 Chicago Ave. S., will be the site for the Chicago Lake
Legal Clinic, a free service offering assistance for landlord/tenant, domestic,
immigration and other problems. The clinic will be open every 3rd Friday of the month from

Pentecost Festival
of Hymns
Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church, 1620 E. 46th St., presents a festival of hymns on
Pentecost Sunday, June 3, at 10:30 a.m. This unique service features a wide variety of
familiar hymns sung by both the congregation and the festival choir of LNPC. The singing
will be accompanied by organ, piano, hand bells and a professional brass quartet. Each
hymn is introduced by a dramatization as the writers tell of their lives, their faith,
their inspiration and their place in the history of the church. The church is
child-friendly and GLBT-friendly.
Gospel/Jazz Service
Minnehaha United Methodist, 3701 E. 50th, welcomes Yolanda Bruce, local gospel/jass singer
of More by Four, to their 11:15 service, Sun., May 20.
CoAM Theater
and Dinner
CoAM is an ecumenical consortium of 28 South Minneapolis congregations that draws on its
own and community resources to minister with and to older adults of the South Minneapolis
area.
Through CoAM, the cost for dinner, transportation and a New Fogey Follies production of
Yours Truly, GI Joe is $39. The event will take place Fri., June 8, leaving from the
Bethel Lutheran parking lot, E. 41st St. and 17th Ave. S., at 12:15 p.m. and returning
around 5:30. The matinee will be at Plymouth Congregational Church and the early dinner at
the Chart House in Lakeville.

Neighborhood Grief Support Group
Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls, 5212 41st Ave. S., is the site for the
Minnehaha Nokomis Grief Support Group's spring series, Coping With Grief and
Loss, Mondays, April 16 - June 25 (no meeting on May 28), 5 - 6:30 p.m.
(Refreshments and registration at 4:30.) This group is continuing in its second year to
offer grief support to persons who have experienced the death of a loved one. Each weekly
session begins with an educational presentation or personal story, followed by small group
discussion and support. Nine area churches and CoAM sponsor this program. Persons of all
denominations are welcome. There is no fee and participants may join at any time. For a

Seed of Abraham

Heart of the City Ministries is planning its metro wide 2001 summer picnic for Sun., June
