The Women’s Cancer Resource Center , 4604 Chicago Ave. S., collaborates with more than 60 organizations focusing on women’s health, cancer prevention and creating a healthy environment for all. One of the organizations is Woman to Woman, an African American breast cancer support project that provides one-to-one support and advocacy for African American women with breast cancer. Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota, a nonprofit community organization that provides confidential counseling, debt management and education, can send out a free brochure outlining the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. The brochure explains what collectors can and cannot do and how to get help if collectors violate the Collections Practices Act. Grease Pit Bike Shop is open three days a week to provide help with do-it-yourself bike repairs, cheap parts and tools. Sun., 4 – 7 p.m., Mon., 5 – 8 p.m., and Tues., 7 – 10 p.m. in the basement of Bedlam Theatre, 504 Cedar Ave. S.

Area children needing orthopedic medical treatment will have an opportunity to be evaluated for quality care at no charge, at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Minneapolis during a screening clinic Monday, Oct. 29, 2001. It is an opportunity for parents to have their child evaluated by a Shriners Hospital provider, who will determine if the child has an orthopedic condition that would benefit from treatment at the hospital.
    Who: For children, from newborn to age 18, with a congenital or acquired condition of the bones, muscles or joints, such as: cerebral palsy, spine deformities, scoliosis, foot or hand deformities, hip problems, brittle bone disease, limb length discrepancies, limb deficiencies, juvenile arthritis, spina bifida, arthogryposis, rickets, and more.

If you think your temper, overprotective tendency and need to control your partner’s choices are standing in the way of a healthier relationship, think about calling the Men’s Line, a free service that provides confidential, short-term counseling for men and boys. The Men’s Line was started over three years ago by the Men’s Messages Action Team of the Initiative for Violence-Free Families and Communities (St. Paul-Ramsey County Public Health) as a way of speaking out against domestic violence. The Men’s Messages Action Team is counting on early-stage abusers and those who witnessed domestic violence as children to use the Men’s Line to get the support they need to break the cycle of violence. The South Minneapolis Coalition for Grief Support is offering a 13-week series at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church on Thursdays from Oct. 11 through Jan 10, 6-7:30 p.m. Adults who are mourning the death of a loved one are invited to attend. Guest speakers will share their own experience and professional knowledge of grief and loss. Small groups for sharing will follow the speaker each week. The Minnehaha Nokomis Grief Support Group offers a new series “Grieving and Growing” from 5 – 6:30 p.m. on Mondays Aug. 20 through Oct. 22 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 4000 28th Ave. S. (enter on 27th Ave.). The Grief Support Group offers education and support to those grieving the death of a loved one. PEACE African Resource Center
Parents and Elders of Africa in Common Efforts (PEACE), a resource center created for African immigrants and open to Africans of all ethnicities, offers emergency, employment, health care and culturally appropriate counseling services. Americans and multilingual Africans teach English classes Monday through Saturday. A multi-ethnic African women's group provides cultural exchange, basic computer and communication skills training, cooking, sewing and day care provider training. PEACE supports an international relief orphanage in western Ethiopia.

A facilitated support group for people dealing with depression and other depressive disorders and the support-givers in their lives is offered from 7 - 8:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month (except for holidays) at the St. Paul JCC, 1375 St. Paul Ave. The only October meeting is Oct. 17. Volunteer Opportunities

The English as a Second Language Program at Holy Rosary\Santo Rosario Church, 2424 18th Ave. S., is in need of volunteers.
    Volunteers do not need to speak Spanish. A two hour commitment once a week for a ten week period is requested.
Classes are Mon. - Thu. mornings from 9:30 – 11:30 and Mon. - Thu. evenings from 6:30 – 8:30. Volunteers would work in small groups with students. An on-site orientation program is offered as well as training through the Minnesota Literacy Program.

Pillsbury House, 3501 Chicago Ave. S., has several opportunities for volunteers.
    A supervised visitation facilitator is needed every other Wednesday, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
    Childcare providers are needed for special events. Payment is in credits, exchangeable for shampoo, detergent, diapers and more, for each hour of service.
    English as a Second Language (ESL) daytime instructors are needed for basic English classes. ESL certificate preferred, experience required. Stipend and credits offered. For further information call 612-824-0708, x110.

Volunteers sought for Internet Training: Become a tutor for the Minneapolis Public Library and help others become computer literate by helping patrons access and explore the World Wide Web. Internet tutors are especially needed at Sumner Library, 611 Emerson Ave. N.; Northeast Library, 2200 Central Ave. NE; and at North Regional Library, 1315 Lowry Ave. N. The Division of Indian Work (DIW) is looking for responsible and caring adults to tutor American Indian children ages 5 to 17. The volunteer commitment is 1.5 hours a week for 10 to 12 weeks during after school hours. Tutors help children with any homework they may have. Community Crime Prevention/SAFE and Seward Neighborhood Group are co-sponsoring a free personal safety workshop at Matthews Park, 2404 28th Ave. S., Thu., Oct. 25, 6:30 - 9 p.m. The topics covered will include self-defense escape tactics; personal safety tips; mace, screech alarms, stun guns and handguns; and how the 911 system works. The St. Paul JCC, 1375 St. Paul Ave., will offer three computer classes for adults in October. “Keeping Your Child Safe on the Internet” is scheduled for 4 - 5:30 p.m., Thu. Oct. 11. “Introduction to Computers” is a five-day class that will meet 10 a.m. - 12 noon, Mon. through Fri., Oct. 15 - 19. “Welcome to the World Wide Web” is set for 9 a.m. - 12 noon, Mon. & Tue., Oct. 22 & 23. 55 Alive's four-hour senior driver class will be offered from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. (One-hour break for lunch) on Thu., Oct. 23, at the St. Paul JCC, 1375 St. Paul Ave. This course is for people who have already taken the eight-hour class and qualify under a new state law to take a four-hour refresher course every three years. A two-day, eight-hour senior driver improvement course is offered in three south Minneapolis locations in October. Persons age 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a ten percent discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. The fee for the course is $19.50. A certified consultant teaches the class. Get on the Bus! Support the Prairie Island tribe; learn about their nuclear waste problem. The St. Paul Area Council of Churches is hosting a “Gateways to Justice” program to take Minnesotans down to Prairie Island on Mon., Oct. 29, for a teach-in about a bill before the Legislature that would allow more nuclear waste to be stored at Prairie Island. The day's agenda includes a presentation on Prairie Island nuclear power plant and storage issues, lunch at Treasure Island and a presentation by tribal staff. The bus will leave from the Immanuel Lutheran Church parking lot, 104 Snelling Ave. N., at 9 a.m. and will return at 4 p.m. The cost is $15.
