Sign up for wind power
on your energy bill
A chance to choose wind power
The Minnesota Council of Churches Ecojustice and Interfaith Climate
Change Campaign is enlisting faith communities and their members
to vote with their dollars in favor of a sustainable future; Xcel
Energy customers (individuals and institutions) now have the option
to voluntarily subscribe to renewable energy as part of their regular
electrical service. Alternative energy, primarily wind generated,
will be offered in blocks of 100 kilowatt-hours. Each block of wind
energy purchased will add $2 to a consumer's monthly power bill.
Individuals can buy as little as one block, or as many as desired.
According to the National Environmental Trust (2000) the electric
power industry is the largest single source of air pollution in
our country. Those who make a choice to buy wind power will lead
the way to cleaner electricity that reduces damage to human health
and ecosystems, and helps fight global climate change. The special
challenge in this opportunity is that renewable energy will cost
a bit more than current electricity. But by committing to this modest
increase now, participants will be directing the electric company
to add more clean energy to their energy mix in the future, which
may bring down future costs for alternative energy.
