Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

When people think about who benefits from Indian casinos, they generally think about Indians who live on reservations. I am a Mille Lacs Band member who lives in the Twin Cities, and it’s important for people to also remember people like me.
I work hard just like my friends and neighbors do. My son and daughter are both in college, and, like many families, we have put a lot of thought into how we should pay for their education. The Mille Lacs Band scholarship program has been extremely helpful with that. It’s just one of the resources we have used to pay for college, and I believe that society’s return on this investment is very high.
This is just one of the Band’s investments in its People to help us build stronger families and communities, no matter where we live. I doubt that a Canterbury Park racino will bring the state the kind of benefits that Indian casinos have.

Sincerely,

Barb Benjamin-Robertson

Dear Editor,

On Monday, May 5, power tools were stolen from a plumber’s truck parked on 32nd Street. A neighbor saw this and called the police, who recovered the tools and returned them to the very grateful plumber.

Whoever you are, neighbor: Thank you.

Your phone call—your willingness to get involved—sent the message that criminal behavior is not tolerated. Your phone call made a significant difference. I encourage everyone to follow this neighbor’s example. If you see something suspicious, call the police. We can all make a difference. Thank you, neighbors.

Sincerely,

Wendy Cook
