Crime news: 38th &
Chicago incidents update
As many of you in the neighborhood already know,
there’s been a recent rash of crime activity at the Super
America gas station located on 38th & Chicago. Here’s
the official information from the Minneapolis Police Department
regarding the incidents. On Saturday, May 21, at 6:34 p.m. a male
suspect robbed Super America at gunpoint, and then fled on foot.
Twenty minutes later in the intersection of 38th and Chicago there
were shots fired. Two victims were hit and suffered non-life threatening
injuries.
Four days later on Wednesday, May 25, at 9:45
a.m. officers were dispatched to a robbery of a person at the Super
America. The suspect had attempted to steal the victim’s vehicle
at gunpoint. The victim struck the suspect’s vehicle while
trying to get away. The suspects then fled in the vehicle they had
arrived in. The victim was not injured. The business sustained damage
when it was struck by the victim’s vehicle.
Both cases are now under investigation. On May
16, City Councilmember Robert Lilligren sponsored a Summer Safety
Meeting that approximately 50 people attended. Chief McManus, Inspector
Gerlicher, Councilmember Lilligren and Schiff as well as others
addressed issues and concerns about activity in the area. People
attending voiced strong opinions about how residents needed to be
a big part of the solution.
The intersection of 38th & Chicago covers
four neighborhoods (Central, Powderhorn, Bryant & Bancroft).
