| Is
your internet phone safe?
Have you or any of your neighbors
considered using Voice Over Internet (VoIP) Phone?
Yes, internet phone service is
much cheaper than some providers today and the long distance service is
free. But, how much do you really know about this type of service? Read
on and learn from one resident’s experience.
A Blaine resident sent an e-mail
to the police department informing them that he disconnected his regular
land line telephone service. He had questions about his 9-1-1 service,
or lack thereof with his new service. He tested the system by calling
9-1-1 from his new phone (using the internet). He was surprised to learn
that the number was correctly routed into Anoka County Central Communications,
but it was NOT sent to the enhanced 9-1-1 system, but rather the non-emergency
phone number—which is answered with less priority than 9-1-1. He
came to learn that his phone service provider did not properly inform
him of the options (or lack thereof) for 9-1-1. If you are considering
using VoIP phone service, research thoroughly your 9-1-1 options. Does
the provider even offer the enhanced 9-1-1 service?
VoIP providers are NOT regulated
by the FCC and as such, do not pay any 9-1-1 fees that you see charged
on your monthly telephone service. If you take a laptop computer with
you out of town, how will your 9-1-1 service function on the road? Check
out the following site for more info: http://www.fcc.gov/voip/.
