Police issue Seward alert

Minneapolis Police have sent out a neighborhood alert for Seward residents and businesses involving fraud and forgery cases over the past month.

An adult female suspect has been arrested and charged with 13 felony counts involving fraud and forgery cases stemming from four separate incidents in the Seward area, according to Sgt. Joel Sandberg, 3rd Precinct investigator.

Sandberg said the case is ongoing, and that businesses and residents in the neighborhood should take precautions. Suspects have been known to write bad checks at neighborhood businesses and steal mail from residents' homes.

They knock on resident's doors and ask if they can do odd jobs around the home. Once they gain a resident's trust, they ask to use the bathroom or for a glass of water in order to get inside the house. While inside, they attempt to steal valuables, including checkbooks and credit cards from purses. The group has also stolen mail containing credit cards and credit card information from mailboxes.

Safety tips include:
1. Do not open your door for strangers or anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable.

2. If you feel someone is trying to con or trick you, call 911 with a good description of that person.

3. If your checkbook or credit card has been stolen, call 911 and file a report in case the bank or credit card company later requests that information.

4. When paying by credit card or check, encourage clerks to examine your identification.

From Aug. 1 to Sept. 8, there were 74 reported crimes in the Seward area, including 6 robberies, three aggravated assaults, 22 burglaries, 6 auto thefts, and 37 incidents of larceny. During the same period, following is a breakdown of total reported crimes in other Riverside area neighborhoods:

Cooper—24 total reported crimes, including three burglaries, two auto thefts and 13 incidents of larceny;
