The Fair’s over: Now there’s a politician on a stick

Ward 12 Minneapolis City Council candidate Kevin McDonald is still out door-knocking before the Sept. 13 primary in the Nokomis and Minnehaha Falls neighborhoods. But he’s getting around on a Segway-T ever since he tripped on a doorstep and severely twisted his ankle.

His doctor had ordered him to wear a walking cast and cut out the heavy-duty campaigning. That didn’t sit well with McDonald, so he came up with the idea of finding a Segway, the one-person, self-balancing electric machine that runs on two wheels.

McDonald tracked down the Segway through Mobile Entertainment, which now rents the machine to the candidate, but first he had to attend the mandatory safety training at Human on a StickT headquarters at St. Anthony Main in Minneapolis.

As an environmentalist and activist, McDonald is a strong supporter of a “multi-modal” transportation system for Minneapolis. “Busing, walking and biking must factor more greatly into our city plans,” McDonald said. Ward 12 includes the Hiawatha light rail line.
