Bridge replacement project to cause bike/car detours

Spring bridge construction projects will keep commuters on their toes. Contractors will begin construction of a temporary bike bypass for the Midtown Greenway on April 17. The Park Avenue Bridge over the Midtown Greenway will then be temporarily closed starting April 24, and will be closed until the end of September 2006. Traffic will be detoured to allow for the construction of a new bridge.

An official detour will be established and remain in use until bridge construction is complete. Traffic will be detoured from Park Avenue South starting at East Lake Street, east on East Lake Street to Chicago Avenue South, north on Chicago Avenue South to 26th Street, and then west on 26th Street to Park Avenue South. Officials report that the purpose of this detour is to provide a safe and legal route for trucks to navigate around construction. Commuters and local traffic may opt to use alternative routes based on their final destinations.
A Midtown Greenway bike detour route will be provided for the duration of the project. Questions or comments, now or during construction, call Don Shaffer at 612-596-0416.
