The Midtown Global Market opened its doors in
a grand way on June 3. The market is located on the ground floor
of the former Sears building (if you’re having trouble finding
it in the Phillips/Powderhorn neighborhood, just look up). Vacant
for ??? years, the building now houses more than 60 vendors, who
sell prepared food, fresh produce, groceries, flowers, plants, and
arts and crafts. Community groups were involved throughout development
of this huge project.
Those groups include: the Neighborhood Development
Center, the Latino Economic Development Center, the African Development
Center, and the Powderhorn Phillips Cultural Wellness Center. And
local business owners worked hard to create a more community-based
use for the space, which is evident as one walks through the market.
Patricia Brown, market manager for Midtown Global Market, stressed
the many benefits the market brings to the neighborhood, including
a safe place to gather, healthy food alternatives and a nurturing
environment for local businesses.
The market is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
In the hallways leading from Allina Hospitals to the market, there
are spectacular historical photos exhibited as well. Go to midtownglobalmarket.org
for more information. Or better yet, go visit this new beacon in
our neighborhood.
