Lake Street construction update
Construction work is progressing on Lake Street
as part of the first complete reconstruction of the major commercial
corridor in South Minneapolis in 50 years.
One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open in the work
zones at all times during construction. Major intersections also
are open although some others will be closed at times during the
project.
Both the roadway and sidewalks are being rebuilt,
along with new streetscape amenities, including decorative lighting,
bike racks, tree plantings, landscaping and signage. Utility work
also is taking place.
Lake Street businesses are open during construction.
Construction on the segment from 36th Avenue to West River Road
has been under way since the last week of March.
The contractor has installed the bituminous
base on the north side of Lake Street from 46th Avenue to West River
Road. The concrete curb and gutter and concrete sidewalks will be
installed during the next two weeks. The bituminous binder courses
have been placed on the north side of Lake Street from 41st Avenue
to 46th Avenue. The sidewalks in this section have been completed.
The pavement and streetcar tracks have been removed on the south
side of Lake Street from 36th Avenue east to 41st Avenue. The contractor
is grading from 36th Avenue to the east. The existing water main
is scheduled to be relined the week of June 25.
Trees and site amenities are being installed
through out the project.
Metro Transit buses that normally operate on this portion of Lake
Street have been rerouted one block south to 31st Street.
