Center For Changing Lives Groundbreaking Ceremony

groundbreaking ceremony for the new Center for Changing Lives. The center will be the new home for
Lutheran Social Services, Messiah Lutheran Church, Kaleidoscope, Phillips West Neighborhood Organization and Faith in the City. Upon completion in 2008, the center will include 48 units of affordable housing, social services, a worship center, and conference spaces for events and training.

Food assistance

Minnehaha United Methodist Church (3701 E. 50th St.) gives away surplus perishables, such as produce and breads, the fourth Saturday of each month. The MinneHarvest starts at 9 a.m. and closes at 10 a.m. The food shelf at MUMC is open Tues. to Fri. from 1 to 3 p.m.

volunteer opportunities

If you love to read but can’t get to the library because of illness or disability, the Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library can help. Volunteers will deliver books, tapes and other library materials to your door. For more information about this free service for Minneapolis residents with limited mobility, call 612-630-6173.
Tutor with the Minnesota Literacy Council and help someone in your community learn English, become a U.S. citizen, earn their GED, gain their adult diploma, learn basic computer skills or learn to read. Call the outreach coordinator at 651-645-2277 or visit theMLC.org.

Experience Corps is looking for older adults to tutor children in the Minneapolis public schools. A small stipend is available to those who qualify. Call Janet at 612-617-7827.

Ebenezer Hall Health Care is looking for volunteers. Several opportunities exist, including serving supper to seniors at Ebenezer Park apartments, delivering Meals on Wheels and more. Call 612-872-8515.

The Hennepin County Volunteer & Community Partnership Program needs parent aide volunteers. Offer your experience as a parent to a single mother or father. Provide encouragement and give hope to single parents who may be coping with health problems, disabilities or other issues. Volunteers are asked to meet with the parent every week for one year. Hospice of the Twin Cities, a community based hospice program serving the 12-county metro area, provides support services for patients and families facing a life-threatening illness. Volunteers become an intregal part of the interdisciplinary team by utilizing their special talents, skills and life experiences. Volunteer training sessions are held at the Plymouth office (10405 6th Ave. N.) on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Sessions are May 15, 22 and 29; and June 5, 12, 19 and 26. Training is free and consists of 21 hours of education and guidance. Pre-registration is required. Call 763-253-2114.

a brush with kindness
A Brush with Kindness can provide painting, minor repairs or general cleanup to low-income homeowners who cannot do the work themselves. Homeowners with a combined household income of less than $36,000 are eligible. A Brush with Kindness, a program of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, is taking applications now for summer and fall work, which occurs from April to October, and applications are processed year round. Migun Minnesota Inc. is collecting items for care packages to send to people in Iraq. Needed are snacks such as beef jerky, nuts, crackers, cookies, granola bars, candy (limit chocolate, as it may melt) and reading materials, games, toiletries and more. For details call 651-552-9688.


Seniors

Nokomis Healthy Seniors, which provides high quality, cost-effective services for seniors, has moved to 4200 Cedar Ave. Volunteers provide transportation to doctor and dentist appointments, friendly visits, shopping, respite care and minor home maintenance. Healthcare services include medication management, foot care clinics and blood pressure checks by registered nurses, as well as personal home health care by certified aides. The “Nurse Is In” program, which provides blood pressure checks, foot care and social time, recently moved to Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church (4120 17th Ave. S.). Adults 50 years or older can become a member of the Senior Tennis Players Club Inc., which offers instruction and arranges places to play at a low cost. There are about 1,300 members in the Twin Cities metro area. Yearly dues are $25, and include 12 lessons. All ability levels are encouraged to join. For more information, go to seniortennismn.com.

Community Updates
National Night Out permits free through July 24. Over 50,000 Minneapolis residents are expected to participate in more than 1,000 National Night Out block events on Tuesday, August 7. Street closure applications received by July 24 are free. Applications received between July 25 and August 2 will be charged $100. To close your sreet for an event call Minneapolis 311. Registrations received by July 24, will be eligible for door prizes from the Minneapolis Police Department.

The Great Graffiti Cover UP
from July 14
to August 25
Several churches in South Minneapolis are partnering to help home and business owners cover up graffiti. The main area they intend to focus on is bordered by Franklin Avenue on the north, Hwy 62 on the south, 35W on the west, and Hiawatha Avenue on the east. They will provide free labor and primer for those who are in need. You can obtain a copy of the consent form by going online to:
