De La Salle deal undone by Met Council
BY ED FELIEN
The Metropolitan Council rejected a land
swap deal proposed by Minneapolis Park Board administrative staff
to allow De La Salle High School to build a football stadium on
park land when they discovered the regional park system wouldn't
be getting anything back in the swap. What Brian Rice (the Park
Board attorney and De La Salle alum) proposed was giving the school
regional park land without paying what it was worth or giving equivalent
land in trade.
The deal now comes back to the Minneapolis
Park Board and the City Council to finalize details. Some observers
were reminded of the original de la Salle who was fond of setting
up forts on Native lands and claiming all the land that drained
into the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers for France. It was he who named
Louisiana for King Louis and his wife Anne. He never got to Minnesota.
The present site of Peoria, Illinois was as far north as he got.
Dorothy Woolfork remembered.
She was a one-woman powerhouse. She worked
tirelessly in the 8th Ward on behalf of progressive candidates.
Her home was a model for the rest of the neighborhood. She worked
two jobs to send her sister's children to college.
She died last week at the age of 91.
