Sustainable Food Resolutions
How can your diet make a positive impact on the health of our planet and on all of us who live
here? Pay attention to the “Big Three” of sustainable food considerations:
1) Eat lower on the food chain! What connections exist between today’s lunch, the rainforest and
people around the world? How resource-efficient is your diet in terms of land, fresh water and oil?
How can our dietary choices better support environmental and personal health? What is “factory
farming”?
2) Eat more organic food! What 10 produce items are the most important to eat organically—
avoiding the most chemical contamination of soil, water, and the foods themselves? What are the
main differences between organic and conventional farming methods? What’s a CSA?
3) Eat more local food! Would you believe that the average fresh food travels between 1,500 to
2,500 miles to land on your plate? How does this affect fossil fuel resources, carbon dioxide emis-sions
and the nutritional value of the food itself? Yet in our global economy, what alternatives do we
have?
