The American Swedish Institute presents "Fit for a Queen: Nobel Gowns of H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden," an exquisite exhibit of gowns worn to the annual Nobel Prize festivities by Silvia Sommerlath since becoming Queen of Sweden in 1976. The exhibit of royal gowns is on display June 11 - September 28. The exhibit is included with museum admission: $6, $5 ages 62+, $4 ages 6-18 and students. Hennepin County is hosting free tours of the Eco-Yard Midtown demonstration site where residents can learn about environmentally friendly, sustainable landscaping from a landscape restoration specialist.
The Eco-Yard Midtown demonstrates how to incorporate lower maintenance lawn, trees and shrubs, prairie, bird and butterfly gardens, a grass swale and rainwater garden into an urban landscape. These sustainable plantings require little water and no fertilizers or pesticides that can be released into our environment as a pollutant. The tours are scheduled from 10 am. to noon on July 12. On June 14, in addition to offering tours every half hour, a plant vendor will also be onsite selling native plants from 10 am. to 2 pm. The tours are free, but registration is required. Midsommar Celebration

This annual festival includes music, folk dancing, colorful Swedish folk costumes, arts and crafts, food, games, head wreath making and many family-friendly activities. The highlight of the day is the procession and raising of a decorated midsummer maypole (majstång in Swedish) at approximately 1 pm. The ASI Spelmanslag will lead the parade, playing traditional Swedish fiddle music. Members of the Twin Cities Swedish Folk Dancers and the Vasa Jr. Folk Dancers perform their favorite dances wearing colorful Swedish folk costumes. Everyone is invited to take part in traditional ring dancing around the maypole.
Midsommar is a favorite Swedish holiday celebrating the beginning of summer when daylight lingers long into the night in this northern land. People in Sweden erect midsummer poles with leafy birch branches and wildflowers. Music fills the air, lively dancing ensues, and merriment continues well into the night. The event is free and open to all and includes admission to the American Swedish Institute museum located within the 1908 Turnblad mansion. For information call 612- 871-4907.

COMMUNITY UPDATES

The Bloomington Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) will be taking requests for applications for their Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list by phone only from 8 am. to 4:30 pm. on June 24 and 25. The HRA will conduct a lottery of all eligible applications for 1,500 positions on the waiting list.
The Housing Choice Voucher Rent Assistance Program helps very low-income households with rent payments. To qualify, families must meet annual gross household income requirements.
