“Nature Detectives,” youth program
October 22, & 29, November 5 & 12, 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
Brackett Recreation Center
2728 39th Ave S.
A world of mystery is located just outside our doors. Discover what happens to plants and animals each fall: Whether they hibernate, migrate, go dormant or build comfy nests, all living creatures are gearing up for winter. We’ll use our detective skills to learn how Minnesota creatures
survive winter. We’ll play games, make stories, and even track migrating animals on the internet through a program called Journey North (if the recreation center has a computer lab). Youth ages 6 to 12. FFI 612-370-4924. The cost is $10.
Science and Satire on Stage
October 24 & 25
In The Heart of the Beast
Theatre
1500 E. Lake St.
Multi-talented puppeteer and political satirist Paul Zaloom returns to In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (HOBT) as part of the theater’s Fall 2008 Visiting Artists Series, co-sponsored with the Twin Cities Puppeteers Guild. Paul Zaloom’s highly idiosyncratic work takes a wide range of forms, from the popular, quirky and educational Beakman’s World for children, to insightful and wickedly funny political satire for adult audiences. The Twin Cities will get a chance to sample both in his visit with two different performances. On October 24, for adults, Paul Zaloom and his cohort, the renowned nightclub puppeteer Lynn Jeffries, will perform “The Tiny Jumbo Jolly Grim Show,” which includes their newest work of jumbo toy theater, “The Abecedarium A to Z.” Zaloom’s bawdy gender-bending take on the old Punch and Judy shtick rounds out an evening of funny and irreverent adult puppet theater which questions, well, just about everything. Adult subject matter; not recommended for those under age 18.
And on October 25, for kids, “Beakman LIVE!,” a live stage spectacle based on the Emmy award-winning children’s TV show “Beakman’s World,” is reprised. The show features large scale, wacky science demos with plenty of audience participation and trademark goofy humor. Beakman (Paul Zaloom) dazzles and amazes with a series of death-defying and belief-suspending demonstrations of intriguing scientific principles. Both Zaloom and Jeffries will also teach workshops open to the public; please see the theater’s website for details, www.hobt.com.

Diadra Decker of Save Our Sky Blue Waters, a coalition of seven leading environmental groups in the state, will be the featured speaker. Ms. Decker will also explain her group’s opposition to congressional legislation proposed by Representative James Oberstar to sell National Forest Service land to Polymet, a Canadian firm, for its mining operation in Northern Minnesota. She will describe how this land grab will fast track hazardous sulfide-mining to avoid environmental review and how it will assist in the destruction of a vital bog and wetland if the mining company is allowed to proceed. The event is sponsored by the Climate Crisis Coalition of the Twin Cities (3CTC). It is free and open to the public. It will be preceded by the Monthly Clean-Energy Vigil to Cool Down the Planet, which will take place out on the plaza at 5 pm. and the 3CTC Business Meeting at 6 pm. All are welcome.
