Author to Speak at Mental Health Confrence

Elyn Saks will read from her memoir “The Center Cannot Hold.” Saks, a Yale Law School graduate and associate dean of the USC Gould School of Law, shares her experiences surviving a major illness she has had since childhood. Elyn Saks’ appearance is part of the 2008 Twin Cities Jewish Book Fair, which hosts 10 prominent Jewish authors for events and readings from November 1 to 22. The fair is presented by the Jewish Community Center of the Greater St. Paul Area in partnership with The Friends of the St. Paul Public Library and Sabes JCC with generous support from The George Kaplan Memorial Foundation.
The reading and conference is free and open to the public.

The church gives away surplus perishables, such as produce and breads, the fourth Saturday of each month. The Minne- Harvest starts at 9 am. and closes at 10 am. The food shelf at MUMC is open Tues., Wed. and Thurs. from noon to 3 pm.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Help children learn to read. Volunteers of America needs caring, older adults (age 50 and up) to tutor K-3 students in Mpls., 4-15 hours a week. Training is provided and a small stipend is available for those who qualify. 612-617-7807.

Help others in your retirement by spending 15 hours a week as a Senior Companion and receive a tax-free financial reimbursement. Senior Companions provide companionship, transportation and errand assistance to elderly community members, allowing them to continue to live independently in their own homes. The Hennepin Cou-nty Volunteer & Community Partnership Program is looking for parent aide volunteers. As a volunteer you can offer your experience as a parent to a single mother or father. Provide encouragement and give hope to single parents who may be coping with health problems, disabilities or other issues. Volunteers are asked to meet with the parent every week for one year. Work with seniors who want to live independently. Longfellow/ Seward Healthy Seniors has a variety of opportunities for you—such as friendly visiting, driving seniors to appointments, providing caregivers respite, etc. Contact Mary Albrecht at 612-729-5799.
