Powderhorn Empty Bowls
November 7, 11 am. to 9 pm.
Powderhorn Park Building
3400 15th Ave. S.
A community meal where friends and neighbors are invited to choose a bowl from hundreds donated by local potters, including students in the Park’s ceramics program. After making a donation, the bowls are filled with soup and bread made with ingredients donated by local farmers and wholesalers, as well as St. Paul’s Lutheran Church community garden. Participants will finish the meal and leave with the empty bowl as a reminder that there are empty bowls that need filling year-round in the community. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Division of Indian Work to support its foodshelf and to Kidz Cafe, a program sponsored by the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association that provides regular dinners to Powderhorn neighborhood kids.
“Nite Lite” Opening
November 8, 5 to 7pm
2948 Chicago Ave.
(upstairs from Roberts Shoes)
As winter intensifies, the days grow short and darkness plays a greater role in our daily lives. Religious and cultural celebrations such as Winter Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah, the Japanese Amatersu celebration and the Scandinavian Beiwe festival use human-created lights as ritual during this season. These manifestations of light are shared across age groups just as they are shared cross-culturally. Focusing on the magic these traditions hold for children, the Camphor Group has created its own illumination for this season. The project emulates the Hasbro© Lite Brite — a once common holiday gift of our generation. In many ways this toy was our first introduction to a canvas, its black surface tilted up towards us to be decorated with glowing plastic pegs. By magnifying this simple toy's scale, the Shoebox Gallery is transformed into a playful celebration of light in these dark days of winter. The Camphor Group is: Helen Franzen, Julia Kouneski, Lindsay Noble, Tonja Torgerson and Patrick Vincent.
