The flow of the Colorado River, the source of power and water for 25 million people is at its lowest level since measurements began 85 years ago. Paul Rusesabagina held insanity at bay for two months in 1994 as he watched his country fall into the grips of genocide. A Hutu manager of a luxury hotel in Rwanda, he sheltered over 1,200 people, including his own Tutsi wife and children, saving their lives at a time when extremists massacred more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi and moderate Hutu tribes. His story is featured in the movie "Hotel Rwanda," starring Don Cheadle. The event is hosted by former television anchor and long-time Twin Cities journalist Roxane Battle. The Grammy-award winning "Sounds of Blackness" will join Mr. Rusesabagina on the program to perform excerpts from "Music for Martin.” The celebration is free and open to the public. Xcel Energy’s Proposal
The Phillips Community Energy Cooperative (PCEC) would like to invite its members and friends to a community meeting on Monday, January 12th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of Plaza Verde, 1516 E. Lake St. The meeting is to discuss Xcel Energy’s proposal to build two new substations in the Phillips community, one near Hiawatha Avenue and another near I-35W, connected by high voltage transmission lines. They are in the process of receiving information, input and comments from the community, and have held four open houses in the neighborhood.

Ninth Ward Award Nominations
Do you know a 9th Ward resident who deserves recognition for their amazing work in your community? Nominate them for a Ninth Ward Award, which honors neighborhood leadership in Corcoran, Longfellow, Phillips, Powderhorn Park and Standish. January’s breakfast with Gary will feature the Annual State of the Ward Address and Ninth Ward Awards. Awards will be given for Leader of the Year, Block Club of the Year, Neighborhood Project of the Year and Youth Leader of the Year. Individuals interested in making a nomination should write a brief description of the accomplishments that they think deserve recognition. City Children’s Dance in the Parks
