Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk
January 9 through June 11
William L. McKnight-
3M Omnitheater
Science Museum of Minnesota
120 W. Kellogg Blvd.
The flow of the Colorado River, the source of power and water for 25 million people is at its lowest level since measurements began 85 years ago. The Colorado River is not the only body of water in danger. In the U.S. alone, 40 percent of rivers are too polluted for fishing, swimming or aquatic life. In the new Omnitheater film viewers will not only get the thrilling experience of whitewater rafting, but will learn about the crisis our fresh water is facing and the ways we as individuals can protect and conserve it. For more information visit smm.org or call 651-221-9444.

The Green House
January 12 through March 8
HGA Gallery, Rapson Hall
U of M Mpls Campus
89 Church St.
The National Building Museum’s acclaimed exhibition “The Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design” is the first to explore the field of green residential design as it reaches a turning point of acceptance by both home builders and the general public. Photographic images and drawings of 22 projects from around the world document the emergence of a new brand of sustainable building. Architects and builders now view sustainability as a catalyst for creative home design and have also begun to think strategically about the environmental costs of building. These new houses are conceived as systems with extended life cycles that must meet green standards throughout the design, construction and living process. Environmental responsibility is an integral, but not always conspicuous, aspect of the contemporary house. The single and multi-family dwellings included in the exhibition are organized by geographic region: desert, waterside, mountainside, tropics, suburb, city and anywhere. Descriptions of the particular assets or challenges of each region and the unique sustainable responses or strategies employed by the architects are included in the exhibition. The HGA Gallery is inside the main entry of Rapson Hall.
“Life: A Journey Through Time,” February 14 through April 12
University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum of Natural History
10 Church St. S.E.,
The internationally acclaimed exhibit that traces the evolution of life on Earth through photos by Frans Lanting, makes its North American premiere Lanting’s photos interpret Earth’s history from the beginnings of primordial life to the ascent of mammals through otherworldly landscapes and breathtakingly intimate portraits of animals and plants engaged in million-year-old rituals. Many of the exhibit’s 62 photographs are matched with real animal, fossil and plant specimens from the Bell Museum’s collection. Lanting, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, frequently portrays wild creatures as ambassadors for the preservation of complete ecosystems. Born in the Netherlands, Lanting serves on the National Council of the World Wildlife Fund, is a columnist for Outdoor Photographer and has received the BBC Wild-life Magazine’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award and the Sierra Club’s Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography. The exhibit’s opening reception, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birthday, is scheduled for 7 pm. Thursday, February 12. The opening event will feature top university biologists, each giving a rapid-fire, six-minute-and-40-second multimedia presentation relating their newest research on evolution to Lanting’s breathtaking photographs. Tickets to the event are $10; admission is free for museum members and university students.

Community Updates

The City of Minneapolis invites the public on Tuesday, January 27, 7-8:30 pm. at Cedar High Apartments, 630 Cedar Ave. S., to help shape the former Dania Hall site in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. The planning staff will host a series of meetings expected to conclude by the end of summer 2009. At the first meeting, attendees will learn about the process and discuss a timeline for redevelopment of this site. Attendees will also have the opportunity to provide input on possible future use of the site and what the site should look like in the future. For background information, the Cedar Riverside Small Area Plan discusses several considerations for redevelopment at the Dania Hall site. The plan can be found online at http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/cped/cedar-riverside.asp. If you have additional questions, please contact Joe Bernard at 612-673- 2422, or at joseph. bernard@ci.minneapolis.mn.us.
