"Green Scare" Author to Speak
February 12, 7 pm.
Cowles Auditorium Humphrey Institute
301 19th Ave. S.
(West Bank of the U of M Campus)
The Animal Rights Coalition is hosting a lecture by award-winning, independent journalist Will Potter titled: " The Green Scare: Using Terrorism Laws to Silence Political Activists." Potter, based in Wash-ington, D.C., is a leading authority on the erosion of civil liberties, post 9/11, and how terrorism laws are being exploited to push a political and corporate agenda. Specifically, Potter focuses on how animal and environmental advocates are being branded "eco-terrorists," in what many are calling "The Green Scare." "The entire animal rights and environmental movements, perhaps more than any other social movements, directly threaten corporate profits," Potter states on the website he created, GreenIsTheNewRed.com, where he blogs about the Green Scare and history repeating itself. His reporting on the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act has been recognized by Project Censored for outstanding investigative journalism, as one of the top 25 “stories that didn't make the news” in 2007. This event is free to the public. For more information (www.animalrightscoalition.com).

Pianist Lydia Artymiw Performs Mozart in Free Minnesota Sinfonia concert
February 13, 7 pm.
Metropolitan State University
700 E. Seventh St., St. Paul
February 14, 2 pm.
Basilica of St Mary
16th Street and Hennepin, Mpls.
The first part of the program is orchestra-only, with works by Aaron Copeland, Gabriel Faure and Edward Elgar. The grand finale will be piano virtuoso Lydia Artymiw’s performance of “Piano Concerto # 21 in C Major, K. 467” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (the theme song used in “Elvira Madigan”). Ms. Artymiw has appeared with over 100 orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East. The Ukrainian-American pianist was called “important” by The Los Angeles Times because “she combines so many diverse qualities: she wields power and delicacy with equal ease; she is securely equipped with technique, and she feels deeply and knows how to communicate her feelings. She stirred her audience repeatedly.”

The Great Winter Festival, now in its twentieth season, is a series of classical concerts offered free to the public by Jay Fishman and the Minnesota Sinfonia in some of the most beautiful venues in Minnesota. Everyone is encouraged to attend and enjoy the casual atmosphere and great music. Children are welcome. All events are free. The Minnesota Sinfonia is perhaps the only professional orchestra in the country to give all of its concerts free of admission charges. Its mission is to serve all of the citizens of Minnesota. For more information call 612-871-1701.

Life: A Journey Through Time”
February 14 through April 12
University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum of Natural History
10 Church St. SE.
The internationally acclaimed exhibit that traces the evolution of life on Earth through photos by Frans Lanting, makes its North American premiere. Lanting’s photos interpret Earth’s history from the beginnings of primordial life to the ascent of mammals through otherworldly landscapes and breathtakingly intimate portraits of animals and plants engaged in million-year-old rituals. Many of the exhibit’s 62 photographs are matched with real animal, fossil and plant specimens from the Bell Museum’s collection. Lanting, whose work has appeared in National Geographic, frequently portrays wild creatures as ambassadors for the preservation of complete ecosystems. Born in the Netherlands, Lanting serves on the National Council of the World Wildlife Fund, is a columnist for Outdoor Photographer and has received the BBC Wild-life Magazine’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award and the Sierra Club’s Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography. The exhibit’s opening reception, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birthday, is scheduled for 7 pm. Thursday, February 12. The opening event will feature top university biologists, each giving a rapid-fire, six-minute-and-40-second multimedia presentation relating their newest research on evolution to Lanting’s breathtaking photographs. Tickets to the event are $10; admission is free for museum members and university students.

Community Discussion on Race,Equity and Children’s Academic Success
February 17, 6 to 8 pm.
Burroughs Community
School
1601 W. 50th St.
Minneapolis Public Schools has scheduled the fourth in a series of community meetings. The discussion will focus on how race and equity pertain to the academic
success of children. “We are concerned that too many low-income and minority children are falling behind their peers in school,” says Eleanor Coleman, executive director of Corporate and Comm-unity Partnerships. “In an increasingly competitive global arena, the widening achievement gap is a looming priority of our Strategic Plan. We believe that parent and community participation is critical to our efforts to create a plan that reflects the realities and hopes of the community we serve.” MPS has scheduled dialogues designed to provide equitable as well as culturally and linguistically responsive opportunities for families to share their perspectives on this critical topic. Board members and district leadership intend to use the collective voice of these meetings to inform our efforts to develop a District Equity Plan. The meeting runs from 6 to 8 pm.; food will be served from 5:30 to 6 pm. Limited childcare will also be available. For more information, call 668-0105.
