Kautokeino Rebellion |
140 Films, 58 Countries to Mpls Film Fest Apr.16-30 (from a Film Fest Press Release) From eight “Made in Minnesota” features to more than a dozen significant selections from Scan-dinavia, Latin America, Africa and Asia--and you name it---the fest is about to launch itself again as the biggest film event of the year in the Upper Midwest. In addition to St. Anthony Main, other venues will include opening and closing galas at the Kerasotes Block E Theaters in downtown Minneap-olis and the Oak Street Cinema for “Best of Fest” dates May 1-7.
More than a dozen visiting filmmakers and acting talent are confirmed to be on hand with ranges of new work. An army of local and aspiring filmmakers as part of the “Minnesota Made” showcase will also be introducing their works.
Prize-winning titles gleaned from leading international and U.S. festivals will have screenings along with a number of Oscar-submitted films this year
Internationally known Nor-wegian director Nils Gaup (his 1987 Pathfinder won an Oscar as best foreign film) will be here to present The Kautokeino Rebellion (Sat. 4/25: 4:30pm & Sun. 4/26: 2:45pm), his dramatic retelling of the rebel Sami uprising a century and a half ago in Arctic Lapland that still reverberates in Scan-dinavia today (its religious overtones have a fascinating and curious Minnesota angle).
Among a group of powerful documentaries will be the epic 1973 standoff at Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, Wounded Knee (Sat. 4/25: 2:35pm & Tues. 4/28 5pm), with Native American activists Russell Means and Clyde Bellecourt scheduled for questions and answers.
Food, Inc (Fri. 4/24: 7:30pm & Sun 4/26: 9:20pm), coproduced by River Road Entertainment (William Pohlad), and directed by Robert Kenner (invited guest), is a devastating critique of how corporate food production monopolies endanger America’s health.
