Letters to the Editor
Dear Powderhorn Neighbors:
My name is Jose Cortes. I’m 14 years old. I go to Jefferson Community School. I live in the Powderhorn neighborhood. I want you guys to support us getting a soccer field in Powderhorn.
I play soccer because it was the only sport I could play well. The World Cup inspired me. I belong to the EMPY team (East Midtown Phillips Youth) that plays in Green Central gym every Sunday. Over 300 kids play. We play indoor soccer.
The problem in Powderhorn is that there isn’t enough space to play. Not only is it important for us but for everyone. It will help reduce violence and people will be more safe. It’s important because for kids that can’t afford to pay to play on a team they can go to this field and play. The solution is that we need this soccer field so all kids can be fit and be free to play. We want you to meet us here at Green Central so we can talk and agree. Neighbors, you guys are the only ones that can help us.
Jose Cortes

Dear Editor,
Thank you for many articles in Southside Pride. I am prompted to write by “Handy-Dandy . . . Homeless Shelter.” It took me a month to get out of a Minnesota shelter. Only to be told I did not have proper mental functioning. Then to be told I could not seek employment while I was seeking a place to live. Prior to that? My father spent two years in jail for strangling my mother … 1970s. Why do you see? Why do you see me arguing against people being on psychotropic “medication”? No psychotropic ever helps. The manufacturer’s website will, at least those I looked at, tell you these medications disrupt “cognitive functioning,” i.e., one’s ability to think. Yes, I know conventional wisdom says otherwise.
