Support for returning U.S. troops
BY ELAINE KLAASSEN
Throughout the country the clergy has been recognizing the need for a ministry to U.S. military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The Lutheran Church (ELCA) has established a network of caregivers and put together a host of resources. Out of compassion, respect and appreciation, the church is providing spiritual and psychological support.
Phillips/Powderhorn resident Amy Blumenshine, educated in social work, religion, theology and ministry, is deeply committed to this ministry. She is one of four writers who wrote a resource book for pastors and congregations ministering to returning U.S. troops. Two of the other writers are chaplains and one is a nurse.
The book cites various studies demonstrating the types of experiences veterans have had. A large number knew someone who was injured or killed. Many saw death face-to-face, had handled human remains, were responsible for a death or reported being attacked or ambushed. The trauma they carry is hidden from the general population. And, while legislative steps are being taken, care for veterans is criminally underfunded. Congregations and clergy want to do what they can to help.
The book is called “WELCOME THEM HOME HELP THEM HEAL: Pastoral care and ministry with service members returning from war.” Books may be ordered from: Elim Lutheran Church of Blackhoof, 2077 County Road 6, Barnum, Minn. 55707 or at welcmelim@aol.com. A donation of $10 or more per book is suggested. Proceeds will be used to print more copies.
