Candidate McGaughey responds

Dear Editor:
In response to your characterization of my campaign, I would respond that, yes, I'm running for mayor, and, yes, I'm serious about running; but, no, my campaign is not about "white men being discriminated against." It's about dignity. That means dignity for everyone, including white people (which is controversial to some people). I'm running under the auspices of the New Dignity Party.

My opinion is that race relations in America are toxic. For the society to heal, we have to get out of the rut of antagonistic concepts that some newspaper editors like to promote, such as the idea that people are being discriminated against. That's not my argument.

I think that all people, whoever they might be, need to cultivate a positive sense of identity. Maybe that can be accomplished in a political context. But first we need to get rid of the stock heroes and villains of the political scene and look at people in a different way-a more respectful way. I hope my mayoral campaign can contribute to that shift in consciousness.
Sincerely,
Bill McGaughey
