South High girls and boys fall to Southwest in soccer

On Sept. 19, Powderhorn and Farview soccer players enjoyed their first game together on the new permanent soccer field at Powderhorn Park. Unfortunately this was not Powderhorn's day. Farview won 10-2. Last winter, Powderhorn Park area soccer players collected over 1,000 postcards asking for the permanent soccer field. At the Feb. 25 Powderhorn Park community meeting, the Farview Park soccer team came down and supported the Powderhorn soccer players as they told neighbors that the permanent soccer field was very important for Powderhorn area youth. The new permanent soccer field was completed Sept. 1.

Minneapolis Southwest Lakers ook on Minneapolis South in a showdown.

It’s an annual tradition to have a big rivalry game between Minneapolis South and Minneapolis Southwest on a Saturday. This time the meeting was held at Southwest. The last time they played each other was in early September. Southwest boys won 3-1 and girls won 3-0.

The girls’ game got started out at a fast pace as each team wanted to try to play keep-away with the ball and shoot for the goal. Both teams got after it early in the game. With 25:22 in the first half Laura Maltby made a nice head shot goal and that gave the

Lakers the lead at 1-0, and it turns out that’s all they needed.
In a hard fought game with a lot of action Southwest came away with victory. Their defense was able to come up with some big stops.

Minneapolis Southwest was able to come up with the 1-0 victory over Minneapolis South. Minneapolis South and #4 Southwest met each other on the field In a heated rivalry in the Minneapolis City Conference, Minneapolis South took on Minneapolis Southwest in the boys’ game. In the most recent rankings by the Minneapolis Star Tribune the Southwest Lakers are 9-1 and are currently ranked #4 in class AA.

There was a lot of enthusiasm by both teams to begin the game. Each team started out playing aggressively.

Antoine Eam scored the first Southwest goal.  In a battle at the net, John Pitsenbarger found the goal as he scored a second goal for the Lakers.
At halftime the score was Minneapolis Southwest 2 and Minneapolis South 0. The second half got underway, and each team really went after the other.
Each team did a good job on their defensive end defending their goal, but Edgardio Becerra Betran scored a later goal with 7:15 left to go in regulation.
In an action packed game the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers were able to come away with the 3-0 victory over the Minneapolis South Tigers.
