Burglaries in Standish neighborhood
BY RUEDIGER HELD
A rash of burglaries hit the area just north of Lake Hiawatha in the fourth quarter of 2009. According to a source at the Minneapolis Police Department, no one has been arrested for those burglaries yet. Even though the police have stepped up their presence in the area, residents continue to be reminded at block meetings to call 911 when observing suspicious activity, including people loitering that appear to be out of place, especially in the back alleys.
Based on data extracted from the weekly crime maps published by the City of Minneapolis, burglaries in this area [between 40th & 43rd Streets East and 20th & 28th Avenues South] have at least tripled, from a baseline of less than five per quarter since 2007, and even more considering the fact that the fourth quarter of the year typically sees less burglaries than mid-year. So far this year, two more burglaries are on record for the above area.
