Andrew Johnson announces a run for City Council

Andrew Johnson has announced his candidacy for the 12th Ward City Council seat. Many people in South Minneapolis have begun to question the priorities of the incumbent when she voted to give a New Jersey billionaire a $650 to $850 million subsidy from the Minneapolis sales taxes for a new Vikings stadium and couldn’t find the $2 to $3 million to continue funding the Neighborhood Revitalization Project that won national acclaim as a model of citizen participation.

Here is his statement:

My name is Andrew Johnson and I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Minneapolis City Council, Ward 12.

As president of Longfellow Community Council, I have worked very hard to better the organization and community, from focusing on important priorities such as revitalizing East Lake Street, to empowering staff with technology that has improved our communication on project updates and events and made us the most transparent community organization in the Twin Cities. I have worked to make our organization more proactive and established a plan to market the community to attract new businesses and residents.

At this point it has become clear to me that the passion I have for the community and the city of Minneapolis is my calling, and I believe that I can best represent Ward 12 and make the changes we need as your next City Councilman.

My top priorities are:

- Listen, be open-minded, seek new ideas, and put Ward 12 residents first;

- Actively support small businesses and entrepreneurs by reducing red tape;

- Improve spending and legislative transparency, reduce waste, and lower taxes;

- Empower neighborhood organizations, turn to them for priorities, and form strong partnerships;

- Environmental stewardship, energy sustainability, bicycles, and mass transit;

- Progress civil and human rights, support students, and empower teachers.

The most important thing you can do to help me is commit to attending the DFL caucus on April 16 and be a delegate for me. It will only take around 120 delegates to win the endorsement of the DFL party for Ward 12. City government really does influence our lives more than any other level of government, from managing our water and streets, to zoning and ordinances that shape our communities.
