South High student recognized for literary achievement

South High senior Molly Hensley Clancyhas been awarded a $10,000 Davidson Institute Fellows Scholarship for authoring a series of stories told through the eyes of young female characters who show that common bonds bring us all together as human beings.

Among the 20 students nationwide named as 2008 Davidson Fellows, Hensley-Clancy received her award at a ceremony held on Sept. 24 at the Library of Congress. While in Washington, she and another Davidson Fellows Scholarship winner from Minnesota, Edina High School senior Michael Cherkassky, met with Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobucher and the office of Sen. Norm Coleman, Reps. Jim Ramstad and Keith Ellison and the House Committee on Education and Labor to discuss challenges faced by gifted students.

Lies, big lies, and Norm Coleman

by Ed Felien
published October 6, 08

The biggest lies are sometimes not the things said, but, rather, the things left unsaid.

For most of his time in the U. S. Senate, Norm Coleman has been chair of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

Harry Truman was chair of that committee at the outbreak of World War II. He investigated war profiteering and saved the taxpayers millions of dollars. He also investigated businesses that were helping the Nazis, and he closed them down. In 1942, he closed down Union Bank for selling bonds to re-arm Germany.

Do you say Murderapolis?

Depending who you talk to, there is good evidence on both sides for a debate over whether as the summer of 2008 draws to a close, our city can be legitimately tagged “Murderapolis.” The Minneapolis City Council says in a press release published Sept. 12 that according to the results of the 2008 Minneapolis Resident Survey, 86 percent of Minneapolis residents rate the city as a very good or good place to live. Poll numbers say 84 percent say their neighborhood is a safe place to live and 79 percent say that people in their neighborhoods look out for each other.

The secret life of beekeepers

by Aimee McAdams
published Oct. 13, 08

With fall in the air, winter just around the corner, and many animals looking toward hibernation, it seems odd to write about bees. Bees are the denizens of spring and summer, busily visiting flowers and gardens everywhere. This year though, while bees take the winter off, a group of people will be busy trying to legalize beekeeping in Minneapolis.

Medical report cards will damage patient privacy

Last May Governor Tim Pawlenty signed a law authored by Sen. Linda Berglin that requires the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to publish medical report cards. The new law authorizes MDH to collect the medical records of all 5 million Minnesotans and use them to publish report cards on all 17,000 doctors and all 131 hospitals in Minnesota.

Neighborhoods lose in battle to keep NRP local

“That’s cute,” said at-large rep. for the Neighborhood Revitalization Project Policy Board, Debbie Evans, when Southside Pride asked her if the creation of the new (9/26) “Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission” by the City of Minneapolis was a victory for the neighborhoods.

Letters to the Editor

We are living with a public health crisis that demands our attention. “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is 100 percent preventable. Simply don’t drink during pregnancy.”

On behalf of the Minnesota Organization of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS), I would like to thank Senator Linda Berglin for her leadership in the Senate and for speaking on behalf of infants, children, and adults living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), a neurological and behavioral disorder caused when a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy.
